Thanksgiving is a strange holiday insofar as art is concerned. For virtually every other holiday on the calendar there is an almost overwhelming stash of seasonal artwork, some of it dating back centuries. Most religious holidays (which, strictly speaking, includes Thanksgiving) are loaded with classic (and not so classic) painted images. The closest Thanksgiving has ever come to a classic painted image I suppose is Norman Rockwell's "Freedom from Want" depicting a multi-generational family sitting down to the proverbial roast turkey being served on a table heaped with elegant glassware, flatware, and china.

Strangely enough, Rockwell always considered this work in his Four Freedoms series to be the weakest, least effective piece. Yet, it stands alone almost, the one painted image bringing to mind all that we have to be thankful for on this day.
