© Rosemary Coonie (12"x12" acrylic on stretched canvas) With appologies to the songstress, I have a fondness for painting animals, partly because I enjoy creating the soft, furry, visual textures, and partly because they usually sell pretty well. I like to explore the close-up of the animal's face best I think. This is especially the case with cats and other round-eyed specimens. This one appears to be so young, sweet, and innocent, I couldn't resist tickling her cute little nose with a brush.

©Jonathan and Fileena (18"x24" acrylic on stretched canvas) My son was nine years old, his Sheltie, Fileena, named after Bambi's girlfriend, was about a year old when this painting was done. The painting was done from a black and white photo taken on a whim simply to use up the film in the camera before developing the roll. Of course I wouldn't part with it for any price, but it serves here as a sample of some of the work that can be seen on my portrait page. This painting hangs in my studio next to my easel.

So Much to DO, So Little TIME

© So Much to DO, so little TIME (13"x14" on Masonite Panel) Some of my best ideas come while I'm trying to go back to sleep in the morning. Being retired, I have the opportunity to sleep late if I like. And sometimes, while the body is willing, the spirit is NOT. I begin thinking. For the last few months I've been experimenting with the fine line between illusion and reality in painting. Most recently, I've been blending real content with illusionary content. This is an example. Originally I'd visualized this as a much bigger, much more impressive work, perhaps twice or three times it's modest 13"x14" measurements. However, Milk Bone's largest biscuit is only five-inches, so in keeping the illusionary images the same scale as the actual still-life objects, I was forced to reduce the size of my original concept. Three boxes of medium-size Milk Bones later, and a very willing, downright EAGER model, this is the results. Photographing the dog bones digitally allowed for a great deal of experimentation on the computer. The idea went through two earlier manifestations before I arrived at this image. And in choosing it, the dog had to be photographed again under different lighting conditions (not that she minded). Eliminating the entire bottom of the frame and allowing the real and illusionary content to spill out at the bottom is my most extensive exercise yet in "breaking the frame".

Buckeye Buck ©Buckeye Buck (18"x24" acrylic on stretched canvas) Ohio is deer hunting country. The week after Thanksgiving is practically a state-wide holiday. They even close schools the Monday after turkey day for "deer day". I'm not a hunter myself, but I think this painting evokes the spirit of the holiday in it's cold, snowy setting, ideal for tracking this kind of rack-bearing prey. I've even had this image done on t-shirts except that no one around here goes deer hunting in a t-shirt that time of year. Maybe I should have put it on a bright orange sweatshirt instead.
Thinly Framed in faux mahogany.........................SOLD............200.

Flora and Fawn © Flora and Fawn (16"x20" stretched canvas) Loved the title of this even before the painting was started. The maternal instincts make wonderful subjects for paintings regardless of whether it's humans or animals. I like wildlife paintings but I always try to warm them up a little, involving an interaction between one or more of my subjects. Sometimes it's fun to use animals of two different types. I once painted a young fawn nose to nose with a chipmunk. No, it wasn't inspired by Bambi.

In her Majesty's Service © In Her Majesty's Service (16"x24" acrylic on stretched canvas) For quite a number of years this painting hung in our bedroom. When we built on a new master bedroom suite, it did not fit the new Caribbean decor so it got relegated to the "inactive" collection. It has the distinction of having survived an automobile accident some years ago with only minor surgery. The subject, is of course the Queen's guard at Buckingham Palace in London.
Framed in lattice....................................................................$150.

Kitten Knittin' © Kitten Knittin' (16"x24" stretched canvas) This just as easily could have been called "Knittin' Kitten". It combines two of my favorite subjects, a still life and a fidgity feline. At the time I did this I was into vigneting, that is the fading of the image into white near the borders. I still like the effect though I've not done it in years.

Couch Puppies © Couch Puppies (16"x20" acrylic on stretched canvas) This is another painting from the Spring of 1998. The gallery in which I display says it's one of the most popular amongst visitors. My wife's family raised beagle pups as a child. She loves this one. Pet portraits are always more fun when the subjects are having fun too.
Thinly framed................................SOLD........................................$175

Barkpack © Barkpackin' 16"x16" acrylic on stretched canvas) A relatively new painting, finished about a year ago (1997), this little fellow is typical of some of the painted pet portraits I've done over the years. I try to capture something of the animal's lifestyle along with its likeness.
Thinly framed................................(SOLD)...................................$95

Legal Beagle © Legal Beagle (16"x20" acrylic on stretched canvas) I make no appologies for being an animal lover and realize that also being a painter, I join a legion of others who delight in trying to capture the essence of their favorite breed. I've always been partial to beagles, shelties, daschunds, bassets, and blond cocker spanials. I must also confess to having done a few felines in my time as well.
Framed in oak....................(SOLD)................$150.
